Five things to learn from the latest filing in the Trump election case
A new 165-page document from the federal lawyer investigating Trump goes into great detail about the illegal actions he is said to have taken to try to overturn his loss in the 2020 US election.
A judge made the filing public on Wednesday. It goes into great detail about how Special Counsel Jack Smith would handle his case if it ever goes to trial, which is not likely. Trump is likely to end the case when he gets back to the White House, so Mr. Smith might never be able to make an opening statement or call a witness.
1) Trump was going to say he won no matter what.
Some say Trump said, “It doesn’t matter if you won or lost the election.” This happened after the election. “You need to fight even more.”
The filing uses these words, which were reported by an unknown assistant who heard Trump talking to his family, as proof that he was trying to change the outcome.
Along with that, the paper says Trump set the stage for challenging the election before it even happened.
It says the Republican was told that the results would not be known until after most Americans had voted, but that he might have an early advantage before the Democrats got more votes from mail-in ballots, which took longer to count.
Many people voted by mail because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Reports say that Trump told his staff that he would “simply declare victory before all the ballots were counted and any winner was projected.”
The filing says that those who worked with the former president knew exactly what that meant.
“He is going to say that he won.” “That doesn’t mean he’s the winner; he’s just going to say he’s the winner,” a Trump adviser is said to have told a small group of his fans.
This summer, the Supreme Court said that Trump cannot be charged for official actions taken as president. This meant that Mr. Smith had to change the historical case and say that Trump committed crimes while he was a private citizen. Trump says he wasn’t doing anything wrong when he tried to stop Joe Biden from being certified as the winner of the race.
